This is the story behind this accident as told by the officer:
People on the scene, including the investigating officer, estimated my speed to be about 50 miles per hour when I left the roadway and hit the tree. What these photos don't show is the 200 feet of skid mark prior to leaving the road. It was my Monday night and I was on my way to work. I had been extremely sick all weekend with the flu, but I did not want to burn up my vacation time because I was expecting my son to be born any day. While traveling along the highway at about 65 miles per hour when I began to feel very sick. I was looking for a place to pull off the road. I recall slowing down for a right hand turn, but I do not remember anything after that. I don't even recall making the turn. When I came to, I saw my map book lying on the passenger seat and realized that I had been in an accident. As for all who might be wondering, my dog was at home that night, therefore, was not injured in the crash. The kicker is, my son was born two days later and all the nurses in the emergency room recognized me as the Deputy who was in the crash.
I was transported to the hospital, but because I was wearing my seatbelt, the only thing I was treated for was dehydration due to the flu.
